Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- Vegetable oil for frying
- For sauce: 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 2 tbsp horseradish
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Cut off 1/2 inch from the top of the onion and peel
- Cut onion into 16 wedges, leaving the root intact so the onion stays together
- Turn onion cut side down and make 4 downward cuts, then make 4 more cuts between those
- Spread petals apart and remove center core
- Mix flour and all dried spices in a bowl
- Beat eggs and milk together in another bowl
- Dip onion in egg mixture, then dredge in flour mixture, making sure to coat between petals
- Repeat coating process once more
- Heat oil to 375°F in a deep fryer or large pot
- Fry onion for 3 minutes, then turn over and fry 3 more minutes until golden brown
- Drain on paper towels
- For sauce: Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, and garlic powder
- Serve bloomin onion hot with dipping sauce
