Outback Steakhouse Bloomin Onion

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For sauce: 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp horseradish
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Cut off 1/2 inch from the top of the onion and peel
  2. Cut onion into 16 wedges, leaving the root intact so the onion stays together
  3. Turn onion cut side down and make 4 downward cuts, then make 4 more cuts between those
  4. Spread petals apart and remove center core
  5. Mix flour and all dried spices in a bowl
  6. Beat eggs and milk together in another bowl
  7. Dip onion in egg mixture, then dredge in flour mixture, making sure to coat between petals
  8. Repeat coating process once more
  9. Heat oil to 375°F in a deep fryer or large pot
  10. Fry onion for 3 minutes, then turn over and fry 3 more minutes until golden brown
  11. Drain on paper towels
  12. For sauce: Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, and garlic powder
  13. Serve bloomin onion hot with dipping sauce

Notes

Make sure oil is at proper temperature before frying
